About Buddhist Humanitarian Project

The Buddhist Humanitarian Project is an initiative organized by the Clear View Project, a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization based in Berkeley, California. A partner organization within the International Network of Engaged Buddhists, the Clear View Project has worked extensively on humanitarian projects throughout Myanmar, Bangladesh, and India.

The current focus of the Buddhist Humanitarian Project is to provide aid and support for Rohingya communities in Myanmar, Bangladesh, and India. In future years, our work may expand to include additional humanitarian projects.

BHP is overseen by Hozan Alan Senauke and Derek Pyle, in collaboration with a global network of socially engaged Buddhists. Hozan Alan Senauke is Vice-Abbott of the Berkeley Zen Center, current Executive Director of the Clear View Project, and the former Executive Director of the Buddhist Peace Fellowship. Derek Pyle oversees communications and website development for BHP. Numerous individuals have assisted with translations; thank you for your support. (To view the list of translators, click here.)

In March 2018, the International Interfaith Peace Corps organized a high-level delegation to the Rohingya refugee camps on the Bangladesh/Myanmar border. They invited Hozan Alan Senauke, initiator of the Buddhist Humanitarian Project, as well as Richard Reoch, former president of Shambhala’s global community, to represent the Buddhist world. It was during this visit that the Buddhist Humanitarian Project announced our international appeal, urging the global Buddhist community to support Rohingya refugees.

The Buddhist Humanitarian Project is founded with the belief that is a moral responsibility for the global Buddhist community to condemn Myanmar’s violence against the Rohingya people. We believe that using Buddhist rhetoric to condone and encourage such violence is a profound distortion of the Buddha’s teachings.

We stand in solidarity with the Rohingya people, calling upon the Myanmar State Sangha -– and all those in power –- to work diligently towards healing, reconciliation, and repatriation for the hundreds of thousands of Rohingya people affected by Myanmar’s military and vigilante violence.

At present our primary focus is on organizing a mass petition/letter to the Myanmar State Sangha Committee, and raising funds for humanitarian relief. We encourage you to sign the letter, and make a donation to support those most affected by the violence.
